Mustang Region
The name ‘Mustang’, is derived from Tibetan word ‘möntang‘- which translates into fertile plain.
Mustang region, located in the Gandaki Pradesh of Northern Nepal, covers an area of 3,573 km² and has a population of 13,452. Though sparsely populated, this region is adorned with unique landscapes, ancient heritage sites and diverse flora and fauna, that are unique only to this place. The forbidden kingdom of Mustang was prohibited for foreigners for the longest period of time. Only in 1992, whole of the district was opened up for tourism and thankfully, such relative isolation from the outside world played a significant role in preservation of the natural ecosystem, local culture as well as centuries old traditions. Bordering Tibet, it is not surprising that majority of population still speak Tibetic languages.
The culture, religion and traditions of Mustang region owes a lot to that of Tibet. It is believed that Mustang or the Kingdom of Lo was once a part of Ngari area of Tibet and Legendary King of Tibet Songsten Gompo is credited with bringing this region under his jurisdiction.
The elevation ranges from 1,372 to 8,167 meters (Mount Dhaulagiri, the 8th highest mountain in the world), with several peaks above 7,000 meters). The entire region lies within Annapurna Conservation Area, the largest protected area of Nepal. It is a vast and arid valley, distinguished by eroded canyons, vividly colored stratified rock formations and barren high-altitude deserts.
